‘With Magnus, you get a lot of responsibility very quickly’

Daan Verweij, Reinier Sombeek and Lex Mooij have all worked for Magnus, a specialist in technology and digital transformation, for years. In a conversation with Consultancy.nl, they tell about their work, how they have grown in their role and the great experiences they have gained in counseling.

About three years ago, Daan and Reinier joined Magnus after completing their studies and their first work experience (Reinier). They have now both managed to take the step to Senior Consultant. What does this mean for them? “More responsibility, closer collaboration with the customer and a team under your care on projects,” the two say.

Yet this development is not comparable to the path taken by starters in the larger consulting firms. At large companies, juniors are mainly deployed for operational tasks, and there is less freedom of movement on projects and internally. At Magnus, on the other hand, juniors get all the opportunities from day one – “or, in fact, after the onboarding” – to think about and take part in projects.
With Magnus, you get a lot of responsibility very quickly

“The great thing about Magnus is that you are involved in everything from day one,” says Daan. “As a junior consultant, you already have the opportunity to participate in the sales process prior to a new project, or you are involved in the deliveries.”

Room for development

At least as important is that starters get a lot of confidence and freedom from Magnus. The consulting firm offers its advisers the necessary support from the outset to best prepare them for their role as an adviser. To start with with a wide range of training courses to choose from.

Daan explains: “With Magnus, you get the opportunity to follow training courses. In addition to many internal training courses, you can also suggest a training course that you would like to follow. For example, I took a JavaScript training myself to become better at programming. ”

The same was true of Reinier. According to him, what characterizes the development process in Magnus is the high involvement of colleagues in these training courses. “Personal guidance from colleagues in my development that really shines through the office,” he says.

“All colleagues on the project you are working on, but also outside of it, are open to explaining things, guiding you or helping you in other ways. This help from different sides ensures that you can develop quickly in different areas, and that you see the importance of also helping your colleagues further, if necessary, ”he adds.

Lex, who previously worked for Deloitte for many years – in his last role as Senior SAP Supply Chain consultant – has also worked for Magnus for about three years. He agrees with the words of his colleagues. “There are plenty of opportunities to develop your own initiatives, such as developing your own proposition or developing great ideas for our clients.”

Varied projects

The core of Magnus’ work consists of the diverse tasks you contribute to as a consultant. Daan, Lex and Reinier have had the opportunity to work on several challenging customer issues in recent years.

“All colleagues are open to explaining, guiding or otherwise assisting you.”

Daan explains: “I started at a car auction company, where dozens of used cars are sold every day. Here, the focus was largely on performance and design of the application. ”

He also worked for an insurance company that offers absence insurance to employers. “We created a portal where employers could list their sick employees and the benefits were automatically calculated.”

And the young consultant is currently working for a company that is closely involved in oil and gas production in the Netherlands, but which is also actively thinking about sustainable alternatives such as geothermal energy or biogas. “There are gradually many developments in this area, which means that there is also great demand from the digital architecture that we build and maintain,” says Daan.

Reinier can also look back on a variety of jobs. “My first job was with a large construction company, where I developed an application that supports the construction company’s many companies in preparing their annual report quickly and correctly.”

He then started working for a transport company, where he and a team managed to create a vast landscape with eleven Mendix applications in two and a half years. He also helped build a mobile application – “this was one of my highlights”.

In addition, Reinier also performs “with great pleasure” assignments for a worldwide manufacturing company and a car service company. “For the production company, we are currently building an application that is the order portal for the customers and takes care of the entire background process from plasterboard ordering to planning and managing the sawing machine. A very nice task that we recently took to Belgium to look at the current production process. ”

Finally, he works for the car service company to digitize the billing process for their customers by customizing an existing application. “Then we will speed up the workflow and billing process in this app so that customers can receive their invoice faster at the counter.”

Lex was active in one of his projects for a large university. “We built a solution in a very short time to support a non-standard financial process. The SAP system proved not to support this adequately and there was a tough deadline at the end of the year,” he explains.

Despite there being some time and everyone working from home due to the shutdown, Lex and his team from Magnus managed with different expertise to deliver this on time. “If you can help your customers that way, it’s really cool.”

Another task he is proud of was a project for a major energy manager. “Here you really see the social impact that your work can have in the form of the energy transition. Then things like a new coalition agreement or the latest sanctions against Russia suddenly have a direct relationship to your daily work. “

“Everyone likes to pick things up and be active. As a result, it is very organized internally. ”

In addition to his client work, Lex also has some internal responsibilities. He explains: “In Magnus, I am responsible for the ‘Digital Solutions’ team. We focus on delivering tailor-made solutions to our customers, and we do so with the low-code platform Mendix. Personally, I’m mainly interested in how you can smartly implement low-code solutions to make extensions to standard business software such as SAP. “

“My customer tasks consist of development, project management and sales. In addition, I am one of the leaders of our team and I also have a number of internal tasks. Because we know few staff positions (we often do this ourselves), this consists of coaching / HR of colleagues, operations management (staffing on projects), recruitment, marketing, etc. All in all, a very varied job! ”

A very nice club

In addition to the varied project work, the trio describes Magnus as a “wonderful company to work for!” Daan says: “Many young people work there, and that is reflected in everything. Everyone likes to pick things up and be active. As a result, is very organized internally. For example, we participate in the Batavier race and have just had a hackathon. ”

“With Magnus, you also get space to take a lot of responsibility,” adds Daan. “Despite the fact that you may have little or no work experience yet, you get the chance to think about everything and do it. This allows you to develop very quickly. ”

According to Reinier, Magnus excels especially because of the “extremely cozy work atmosphere, the enthusiastic and pleasant colleagues and the fun excursions we have”.

He also points to the freedom that employees get to do fun and innovative things. “It’s really fun and stimulating. If you have a good idea; go ahead and show that it provides value for us or our customers. ”

Lex adds to his colleague: “For me, Magnus is a really nice group of people who want to do fun things together. In terms of work, this translates into a lot of space to develop your own initiatives, such as developing your own offer or good ideas for our customers. ”

He also points to the many social activities. “Last week we did a hackathon, where we worked and presented different customer cases with six teams with a good party at the end. We also have a number of sports teams, a band and we participate in all kinds of (sports) events, fortunately it is now possible again. For me, that is what really sets Magnus apart. ”
