In this episode of Start-up of the day, we talk to Thijs Verberne, the founder of Valkenswaards Stage App. The verbs have never even been in practice. In fact, he never even studied. Entrepreneurial blood flowed where it could not go, and after havo three he left his study career for what it was. He immediately started his business. He first built two escape rooms, now a website and an app to connect companies and interns more successfully.
A very interesting choice to go for an internship if you have never been to an internship yourself.
“Haha yes. I know it’s special. In the years after I had already stopped school, I was allowed to train interns. I’m not even created for the school system. Do you follow the compulsory courses through a certain regime? No, I to be able to do my own thing, to be able to live, then I get excited. I learned more after I left school than when I was still in school. Entrepreneurship is more for me. Therefore this project. It is a precursor to a project “We are also working on it. I can and will not say anything about it in this interview.”
What’s innovative about you? Don’t already have Stageplaza and similar websites?
†We are not necessarily innovative. We ran tests before we established ourselves as a foundation, and it turned out that many internships and interns do not know where to find each other. Yes, for example, you have Stagemarkt from the government, but even there the matching percentage is low. Many students (seventy percent) are looking for their internship online, eighteen percent of them find an internship. That’s a really low percentage, we thought there could be another way. ”
“We are not only a platform where companies can create their internships, we also actively contribute with ideas. Does a business have only short text? We will then call you with the suggestion to also add an image and make the text more attractive. In addition, we also have contacts with educational institutions, and we are now in dialogue with SBB and the government about future cooperation. We have the companies, they have the students. ”
You currently have 12,910 internships online. How quickly do those seats fill up?
†There are internships. A place may have several outstanding internships. So at the moment there are about 12,000 companies online, but in our system 70,000 companies have an account. Initially, we made the procurement via email, which was the easiest. Our company is now growing so fast that we are now also in talks about new employees. If there is, we can also contact companies by phone. ”
“I do not have the numbers at hand. It obviously varies a lot from company to industry. How quickly such a space is filled also says something about our service. We are all still working on this, also to improve the website and the app, to place other filter options “We help the companies and the students by being a link, but in the end they have to decide together whether they want to continue. We have no part in that.”
How much does it cost for a business or student to use your service?
“A company can put an internship online for free for thirty days. After this trial period, it costs 12.50 euros per month, with an annual subscription of 7.50 euros per month. Businesses can pause their subscription every month. Such an internship will remain online for as long as necessary. The app is free for students to use. ”
