Philadelphia gets the most out of the digital world

The Philadelphia Health Organization is not only committed to data-driven care, but also looks every day at how clients’ quality of life can be improved with consumer technology. A special team (The best of the digital world of Philadelphia) is investigating how all this technology can best be used to improve the quality of life. Moniek Hegeman-Kokhuis, coordinating supervisor at the De Roef residence, explains that technology can help any resident in one way or another. “It does not matter what level the residents have.”

The best of the digital world

The Best of the Digital World began in 2019 as a Philadelphia project with the goal of strengthening venues with technological capabilities. The best of the digital world is now no longer a project, but fully integrated into Philadelphia’s services. Places can contact the team if they want to borrow resources, or if they have questions about, for example, the use of technology.

Data-driven care

The Philadelphia Foundation offers guidance to people with disabilities. These are customers who are unique and who need support or day activities to a greater or lesser extent. This happens in many different residential areas. Due to the use of technology, the fund is collecting more and more data. This data helps employees in their daily work. This is done, for example, with location dashboards. On these dashboards, healthcare professionals can see information or incidents, absences, finances and many other information.

Location scans help with innovation

One of the locations that really likes to use technology is location De Roef in Rijssen. Here live 35 elderly residents. Technology has played a big role here since construction. ‘As soon as the site was built, we immediately started with home automation,’ says coordinating supervisor Moniek Hegeman-Kokhuis. She finds it a challenge to explore how she can use technology to improve residents’ quality of life. That’s why she’s part of a working group of early adopters: colleagues from the region and people from the ‘The best of the digital world’ team. When someone from the working group told me about the possibility of a location scan, I immediately asked for it.

Technological solutions from the digital world

During a location scan, the team of The Best of the Digital World looks at which technological solutions are suitable for a location. Moniek Hegeman-Kokhuis asked her colleagues what they encounter in daily care. “The location scan then resulted in recommendations,” she explains. When more people knock on the door with a specific problem, the team starts looking for a solution. This can then be included in the lending service’s range.

Hegeman-Kokhuis also occasionally borrows products from Friends of Philadelphia’s Innovatheek. When a product catches on, it is often bought by the place. Successful applications include the use of a vibrating alarm clock, a robot dog and a robot cat. “The residents react very differently to this. One thinks it’s nonsense, the other really messes with it. We deploy the robots at times when the residents are alone and have nothing to do. Or to create a connection with or between residents. ”

Digital daily planning contributes to quality of life

At Philadelphia, it is believed that the use of technology can contribute to a normal, individual life. A good example is ‘MyEigenPlan’: a digital daily schedule. Here, residents can see what the weather is like that day, what’s on the menu in the evening, and what supervisors work there. The planning gives the residents structure and makes them more independent. For example, they no longer have to keep asking who is coming to work the next day, but can just see for themselves.

Moniek Hegeman-Kokhuis keeps up to date with the latest technological tools via the Philadelphia intranet. If the offer changes, she will share it with my colleagues. There are also regular Saxion students at De Roef. “They are trained nurses and specialize in health and technology. These interns are looking at technological solutions that we are not using yet. For example, we will soon be working with the robot Tessa. ”
