“We have proven ourselves”

Tholen – Meteor Systems has been in existence for 25 years. The company produces and distributes complete cultivation systems for (greenhouse) horticulture, as well as several cultivation systems, irrigation, pipe rail supports, long beams, shelving cultivation, fruit hides and cultivation solutions for NFT, DFT, CEA (Controlled-Environment Agriculture). Their products are used for growing vegetables, soft fruits, cut flowers, medicinal cannabis and leafy vegetables.

In 25 years you get a lot of experience and knowledge. They share it with their customers. Peter Lexmond: “Strawberry growing is a good example of this. We have so much internal knowledge about this. We actually offer everything for this: tray fields for growing strawberry plants (sometimes with gutters above), growing systems for indoor and outdoor growing, fruit hides and more. In fact, we supply everything from cuttings to the end product. ”

Peter Lexmond has been involved in this business virtually from the beginning of Meteor Systems’ existence. So Peter has been with us for a while. Of course, a lot has changed. What, according to him, has not changed are the short lines of communication. “Shifts can be made quickly.”

Meteor was only 2 years old and employed 15 people when Peter arrived. The counter now stands at 100 in Breda, 15 in Canada and a 1 on their own Chinese unit for that market. A flexible layer of temps and self-employed is built around this permanent layer of labor.

“We have proven ourselves”
They started with drip irrigation back then. In the beginning, it was difficult to gain a foothold in the established order. “The market was a bit shaken when we approached the growers ourselves. We took the opportunity to prove ourselves through the direct contact with the breeders. We hardly do that anymore. Now most of it runs through the installers, ”confirms Peter.

Production and sales of complete cultivation systems were realized a little later, in the late 1990s. When they started this, the upscaling in the horticulture sector was just underway. It worked well. They took a ride on that stream. First came tomato, rose and strawberry, followed by cucumber, pepper and eggplant. And geographically, it was the Netherlands and North America first. Meteor now sells their cultivation systems worldwide.

Steps taken
There are quite a few of these. Too many to mention here. After the growth in the market and thus the company, the next step was the acquisition of Worm Lathum from Duiven. In 2009, the company doubled in size in one fell swoop.

Wide building

The next milestone also has to do with these acquisitions; the location from Duiven (formerly Worm Lathum) and Etten-Leur moved to Breda. “The merger has gone well. The benefits are great, especially in the field of logistics and communications. says Peter.

Canada / China team

The openings of the department in Leamington, Canada (2005) to the North American market and the one in Shanghai, China (2019) should not remain unmentioned as important steps in Meteor history.

Patent
And in product development, progress is being made. The latest achievement is the patent on cultivation without substrate. This addresses the problems of peat extraction and provides an answer to a technology-based approach to food production. In short, it means that the seed is grown and rooted on a growth path. This pad is then placed on a float or plant carrier to allow the plants to grow further. The same pillow can then be put in a wax cup and delivered to the chain store.

Peter: “Large retail companies want less land left in the store. Customers think it’s messy and it’s not pleasant compared to the presentation. The bowls can be made of biodegradable material. There is no need to use plastic anymore. Another great benefit is the extended durability. Consumers immediately reap the benefits themselves. By the way, we only pitched this concept during the Ahold Beter Eten Festival 2022. It was good. Interest has been aroused. We can not wait to roll this out further. We want to keep you informed. “
