Universal Robots, the European manufacturer of collaborative robots (cobots), is adding a new cobot (UR20) with a payload of 20 kg to its product range. The company will announce this during the Automatica trade fair in Munich.

The cobot, which is named UR20, has been given a completely new design based on Universal Robots’ many years of experience. UR20 is the best example to date of Universal Robots’ drive for innovation in cobots. The new cobot has a completely new joint design that enables even faster cycle times, in addition to the ability to lift heavier loads. The range of 1,750 mm is designed to work up to the full height of a standard euro pallet, which will have a major impact on the way companies pack and palletize. The small footprint also gives companies more options within their existing production space, such as compact placement close to the pallets.

The cobot redefined with UR20

In addition to palletizing, Universal Robots expects the UR20 to be used for welding, due to its motion control, as well as for material handling, machine loading and machine operation. In addition, companies can also implement UR20 for innovative solutions that the manufacturer’s comprehensive partner ecosystem is constantly creating.

“This is not just a larger version of our existing cobots – we have redefined the cobot,” said an enthusiastic Kim Povlsen, president of Universal Robots. “UR20 is the most innovative cobot we have yet produced, the latest development in 17 years of engineering experience in the robotics sector. Our engineers have completely redesigned the arm, while maintaining the same intuitive user interface that we have long been known for.”

“The benefits of UR20 are significant; from faster cycle times and the ability to handle heavier loads to greater range with a small footprint. We have also built-in advanced software enhancements, giving users unprecedented motion control capabilities. “

50,000 cobots

Universal Robots launched the world’s first commercially viable cobot in 2008 and has since built an ecosystem of more than 1,100 integrators, distributors and independent partners, creating parts, kits and applications for cobots. The company has already sold more than 50,000 cobots worldwide, of which nearly 2,000 are now in the Benelux. In designing this latest product, the manufacturer has made full use of the knowledge gained from its established customer base.

UR20 is the start of a new series of cobots

UR20 marks the start of a new line of innovative next-generation cobots that will complement the company’s e-series. Universal Robots brings this high payload model to market as the first in its series as it makes end-to-end automation a reality where cobots are constantly given new automation tasks.

“This UR20 is just the beginning,” concludes Kim Povlsen. “As the next step in redefining automation, we want to bring the same innovative features to a whole new family of cobots. The effort we put into creating the best possible products reflects our commitment to every customer’s success and development. “UR20 is a perfect example of this. We are committed to quality technology, fantastic Scandinavian design and an excellent user experience, from software to UR caps.”
