Opening of Mondai: House of AI

News – June 23, 2022 – Web Editor Communication

The new House of AI, Mondai, officially opened its doors on TU Delft Campus on Thursday. In Mondai, science, education and innovation in artificial intelligence will meet through a programming of lectures, workshops, hackathons and other events for students, alumni, scientists, professionals and interested public. Mondai is also the first Convergence Square in Delft: where the collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Erasmus MC regarding AI, data and digitization can take place.

Mondai is Japanese for ‘question’ or ‘problem’. The aim is to connect parties in an accessible way and thus stimulate innovation, exploit economic opportunities and contribute to social challenges and problems. Think, for example, of inspirational sessions for SMEs where companies and organizations are helped on how to use AI in a good way to realize a project or answer a question.

Collaboration is essential

Geert-Jan Houben, Vice-Rector Magnificus AI, data & digitization at TU Delft says: “The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as an enabling technology is enormous. At TU Delft, we research, design and build the AI technology itself and its application, and we develop innovations together with the business community. AI education is offered to all students, and AI plays a key role in research across all faculties. It is great that Mondai is now here, a place where partners can also meet in person. ”

Rector Magnificus Tim van der Hagen adds: “AI, data and digitalisation are increasingly crucial to solving the great scientific and social issues of our time. Almost 1500 researchers at TU Delft alone work with artificial intelligence. The innovation ecosystem TU Delft Campus also has a strong focus on AI and digitization with several field laboratories such as RoboHouse, SAM | XL and Do IoT. In order to exploit the great potential in the field of AI, cooperation between all these parties is crucial. With Mondai, TU Delft is at the forefront of this. “

New ideas and connections

In addition, TU Delft works closely with Erasmus University and Erasmus MC on various themes within the so-called Convergence. Mondai houses Convergence Square, the meeting place for scientists and other partners active in Convergence. Leiden University and LUMC are also associated with the theme of AI, data & digitization. Floris Italianer, director of Convergence, says: “In times of Covid and post-Covid, it is important to also have a good meeting place. We are now creating this with this Convergence Square on the TU Delft Campus. New ideas and connections can arise here. In this way, we create new opportunities together, and as a region we can take a leading role in this important theme. ”

Things to do in Mondaic

Activities and programming in Mondai have already started: for example, an AI symposium by Team Epoch, one of DreamTeams, took place, and there are regular DeepDive meetings for Human Centered AI. An AI inspiration session for SMEs and AI Convergence ‘Mixers’ is planned for the autumn, where business stakeholders and governments will gather on a specific theme. TU Delft AI Labs will also hold their monthly meetings in Mondai.
