The TechTransfer service is responsible for the creation and management of intellectual property, the commercial development of university research, the creation of university spin-offs and for supporting the acquisition of external research funding.

Job description

Ghent University opens a vacancy within the TechTransfer service for the position of Data and Software Licensing ManagerSoftware applications are being developed at Ghent University in many research domains. These are research results ranging from embedded software on microcontrollers to software in the cloud, as well as scripts running on commercial modeling platforms, in various disciplines such as chemical modeling, bioinformatics, language analysis, machine control, statistical models, pharmaceutical models, plant growth models, research tools in the welfare sector, etc.…. Several software applications have been developed based on a research question and are therefore not available as a commercial product for valorization.

As a License Manager, you advise on software development and data management and you support valorisation processes within IP strategy and business activities, including concluding licenses with existing companies or new spin-offs from Ghent University.

The ultimate goal of your tasks is to facilitate the flow of technological innovations to companies and communities.

Your main tasks consist of:

  • Advising application-oriented research projects within data and software applications on the commercial and legal aspects related to product development and valorization.
  • Development of an IP strategy and practical guidelines for the protection and valorisation of research results in data and software applications.
  • Advise on intellectual property rights such as copyright, database and patent law.
  • Development of an internal system for managing data and software and related licenses.
  • Consulting, negotiation and monitoring of data and software licenses.
  • Development and consulting of business models for the commercialization of data and software related products and systems.

Profile

  • You have a master’s degree in computer science or engineering; or you have a degree in civil engineering or commercial engineering or you have a cand.jur.
  • You have at least 5 years of relevant valorisation-oriented professional experience in data and software applications with regard to at least two of the following aspects:
  • valorisation of research in general;
  • development and commercialization of data and software related products and systems
  • business development in a business-to-business environment or an academy-to-business environment;
  • intellectual property rights and data / software related licensing models
  • You belong to the academic and business sector and can handle projects both independently and in teams;
  • You have an enterprising attitude, are diplomatic and you are results- and service-oriented;
  • You are a team player and do not hesitate to work in a complex work environment with many stakeholders;
  • You have pronounced communication and communication skills in Dutch and English;
  • You are well organized, proactive and punctual;
  • Experience or training in the following elements is a plus in your profile:
  • Knowledge of or experience with the development of data and software related products
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of software architecture and its development.
  • Knowledge of or experience with the commercial and legal aspects of product development and commercialization of software-related products and systems.
  • Experience with the contractual aspects of research and valorisation projects (licensing agreements, collaboration agreements);
  • Experience with or knowledge of copyright, database, patent law and other forms of intellectual property.
  • Knowledge of business models for commercialization of data and software related products and systems.
  • Knowledge of open source software licensing models as well as commercial licensing models
