Maarten IJzerman appointed Professor of ‘Cancer Health Services Research’ at ESHPM

Prof.dr. Maarten IJzerman has been appointed Professor of Cancer Health Services Research at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM). Maarten’s chair is embedded in the Health Services Management & Organization (HSMO) section led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Kees Ahaus. “With the arrival of Maarten and this chair, we are greatly strengthening our current activities in cancer health research. This positions us even better in the collaboration with Erasmus MC and TU Delft.”

Within the HSMO section, his research focuses on improving the access and organization of personal cancer treatment. The research is data intensive, where connected real-world data sets are used to improve personal cancer treatment, including through the use of complex molecular diagnostics and treatment. Maarten’s research has an international focus with several programs in Australia, Canada and Europe. He is also a visiting professor of Cancer Health Services Research at the University of Melbourne Center for Cancer Research and the School of Population and Global Health.

“With this employment in Rotterdam, there are many opportunities to further develop my research in collaboration with Erasmus MC and TU Delft. In this chair, I will also work more closely with RSM, especially in operations management and healthcare systems engineering, but also with the other EUR faculties. ”

About Maarten IJzerman

IJzerman has been Dean of ESHPM since May 2022. Prior to that, he spent more than four years at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Center, an alliance of 10 hospitals. Here he led a data-intensive Cancer Health Services Research program. Prior to his appointment in Melbourne, he was a professor at the University of Twente. He has held various management positions there, including Chairman of the Department of Health Technology and Services Research and Prodean of Health & Biomedical Technology at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Since his Ph.D. Among other things, he has gained international experience at Case Western Reserve University and the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States.

The Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) is a leading faculty of health policy and management in health policy and management. Multidisciplinarity of research is characteristic of ESHPM. Researchers from different fields (such as health economics, health law, organizational science, public administration and medical sociology) work closely together in the field of health. ESHPM researchers work together on important research topics, but also explicitly seek collaboration with the social partners. In this way, the relevance and applicability of the research is continuously ensured.
