New favorite in race for heritage Johnson, first debate next week | NOW

The list of candidates for the British Prime Minister’s Office has been shaken after one of the favorites, Defense Minister Ben Wallace, resigned. Rishi Sunak, the former finance minister, now seems to have the biggest chance. The candidates are due to debate with each other for the first time next Monday. These are the most promising candidates at the moment.

This is how the upcoming election in the Conservative Party works

  • Interested parties can stand for election if they are supported by at least eight party members.
  • Then the voting rounds begin. After the first round of voting, candidates with less than eighteen votes are eliminated.
  • In the second round, all candidates who receive less than 36 votes are eliminated.
  • After this, the candidate with the fewest votes per ballot. This process is repeated until there are two candidates left, after which a decisive vote follows.

Rishi Sunak

Sunak heralded the end of Johnson with his resignation as finance minister. His explosive statement, in which he strongly criticized Johnson’s policies, proved to be the start of a huge emigration in the British Cabinet.

In the polls, Sunak had to settle for third place and about 12 percent of the vote before the weekend. According to BBC news more than one in three party members now support him, making him the clear favorite.

Sunak has already announced these plans

  • The resigned finance minister has no immediate plans to lower taxes. He will first let the economy recover from the corona pandemic.

Sunak must have welcomed Wallace’s news with open arms. The defense minister decided not to run in the election, while he was Sunak’s biggest competitor in the polls.

The former finance minister has a love-hate relationship with the British public. He has been praised for the relief efforts he launched at the start of the corona pandemic. However, he was later accused of failing to provide adequate financial support to the middle class. In addition, he was fined in the partygate scandal, which has not been appreciated.

Penny Mordaunt

Sunak’s main challenger is now Penny Mordaunt. She owes her popularity in part to her criticism of Johnson. At the previous internal election in 2019, she supported his opponent Jeremy Hunt. As a result, she fell into disfavor with Johnson.

Mordaunt was Britain’s first female defense minister. During the corona pandemic, she made a comeback in the British Cabinet, albeit in less prominent positions: she is Deputy Secretary of International Trade.

Mordaunt announced these plans:

  • Mordaunt has not announced any concrete plans since she ran for office on Sunday. However, she argues for more ‘collective leadership’.

In part because of the distance between Johnson and Mordaunt, she emerged relatively unscathed from last year’s scandal series. In fact, 49-year-old Mordaunt criticized the lockdown parties, calling them “shameful.”

The former Brexiteer is widely seen as the person who can reunite the divided Conservative party.

Liz Truss

Foreign Minister Liz Truss continues to score well in the polls, whether it is at a considerable distance from Sunak or not. Truss has been proposed several times during Johnson’s term as his successor and has supported him until the last minute. Presumably she would entice his followers with this.

Truss is already loved in the Conservative party. She has always been able to count on great support in internal opinion polls. To the public, Trss goes on to cite former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as her prime example.

These plans have Truss announced:

  • Truss will lower the tax ‘from day one’. One of the biggest pains of the British people is the expensive living conditions. Truss does not specifically substantiate how it intends to finance tax breaks.

The 46-year-old Truss is considered a rising star within the Conservative party because of his “unrestrained commitment”. She is the second woman to hold the post of foreign minister and was involved as a negotiator in the Brexit negotiations.

Tom Tugendhat

Just hours after Johnson announced his resignation, the House of Representatives Tugendhat has already announced that he would like to succeed him. It came as no surprise. The 48-year-old MP has been a critic of Johnson for several months and said in January he wanted to succeed him.

Tugendhat is a veteran who served with the British Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a staunch opponent of withdrawal from Afghanistan last year. “I served the country there, and now I want to do it again, as Prime Minister,” he wrote in a statement Thursday.

These plans announced Tugendhat:

  • Tugendhat has joined the camp of graduates who “want to cut taxes in all parts of society.” He did not immediately answer questions about how he wanted to achieve this.

At first, Tugendhat seemed to have little chance of winning the premiere. However, he is said to have gathered more support since the weekend. British media acknowledge that he has supporters in the Conservative party, but Sunak and Truss can get more voters behind them, political scientists suspect.

Jeremy Hunt

Hunt is the son of an admiral in the British Navy. He entered the British Parliament in 2005 and has long been one of the main allies of David Cameron, who was the leader of the Conservative Party from 2005 to 2016.

Hunt, 55, is the longest-serving health minister in Britain’s history. He held that position under both Cameron and his successor Theresa May.

In 2019, Hunt himself tried to become the leader of the Conservative party, but lost to the winner Johnson in the final vote. In the confidence vote against Johnson, he would have voted for his resignation.

Hunt still has to settle for a modest fifth place in the polls. To reassure voters, Hunt also wants to lower taxes. “That way, our economy can grow because companies make more profits and in return pay more taxes. It also creates new jobs,” Hunt explained in an interview with The Telegraph.
