You can now take a course on Harry Styles at university

True fans probably won’t need it, but you can now take a Harry Styles course at Texas State University’s Honors College. The course is officially called Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet and European Pop Culture. It will go deeper into Styles’ music, but also into the themes that the singer himself finds important.

From next year, Texas State University’s Honors College in the US will allow you to take a course dedicated exclusively to Harry Styles. The course is part of the history faculty and will look at recent history through the singer’s work.

Harry Styles

The new course was officially named ‘Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet and European Pop Culture‘. As the title suggests, the course will not only study Harry, but also delve deeper into pop culture. The course description reads as follows: “The course will focus on the work of Harry Styles and the political development of contemporary celebrity regarding gender and sexuality, race, class, nation and globalism, media, fashion, fan culture, internet culture and consumerism”.

It’s quite a sandwich, but Louie Dean Valencia, the professor of digital history who will be teaching the course, explains it further in an interview with KXAN. “As a historian, I want the lessons to show how much the world has changed over the past 12 years. But I also want to show the historical context through the lens of Harry Styles. Thus we will be able to learn from him and his work, activism and philosophy as from other great artists. There are so many lessons about the Beatles that give an insight into life in the sixties. The lessons about Harry Styles can do that about this part of modern history.”

The class is an elective for Honors and History (Europe or World), International Studies/European Studies, Popular Culture Studies, Diversity Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies majors at Texas State University’s Honors College.

“Not about his personal life”

Professor Louie Dean Valencia has explained his lessons a little more via TikTok. “We will look at the history of the past 12 years. So we will start with the first time Harry Styles was on stage. In the lessons we will also study Harry’s favorite books. This includes the books by Haruki Murakami and Richard Brautigan. From that we can find the influences that Harry used in his songs.”

“The class will also look at the things that Harry himself finds important,” the professor continues. “We talk about sexism, the queer community, racism, gun laws and so on. It’s not just about Harry Styles, it’s about the world we live in now.” In addition, Valencia emphasizes that the lessons are not about the singer’s personal life. “We only talk about the things that are publicly known about him. The purpose of lesson series is for us to learn from the things he’s published or said. Through that lens, we’ll learn about his music and his art. But hopefully we’ll also learn a little bit about ourselves.”

In the video on TikTok, Valencia also explains that he himself is a big fan of Harry Styles. “The music of One Direction and Harry Styles helped me through my PhD.” He hopes the lessons can bring together other fans interested in discussing Harry Styles and the topics covered. Valencia also says he will keep everyone informed about the lessons via social media.
