Meatable, the leading food company that produces cultured beef and pork using cutting-edge technology, today reveals the first images of its pork sausage. This cultured pork product is the first product from the Dutch company whose mission is to satisfy the growing hunger for meat worldwide – without harming the planet or the animals.
The sausage of the future
The unveiling of Meatables’ cultured pork sausages represents a major breakthrough for the company. Since its inception in 2018, Meatable has been committed to refining the cultured meat development process. Thanks to the use of the opti-ox™ technology, the use of fetal bovine serum (FBS) is unnecessary throughout the process. Rightfully ground-breaking and animal-friendly; Meatable only needs one cell to mimic the natural growth of muscle and fat at scale and develop real meat. The cell is taken from an animal in a painless way.
In recent months, the Meatable team has made great strides in developing their product. We have succeeded in making a sustainable and animal-friendly product with exactly the same characteristic structure, texture, shine and taste as we know from traditional pork. Including all the functions that consumers know and love. The sausages produce the same sounds and smells when they are baked. It’s not just like meat, it’s real meat.

The potential of Meatable’s meat is huge, ready to be embraced by consumers, without the negative impact on the planet and animals. Meat sausages only take a few weeks to develop. Currently, 14% of global CO2 emissions are caused by livestock farming. Studies indicate that cultured meat can reduce the industry’s environmental impact by up to 92%. According to Meatable, cultured meat is therefore essential for combating climate change and contributing to a healthier planet.
The development of a new food system
Meatable develops the sausages to meet the high demand from potential customers in Europe and the USA. The German market alone accounts for around 27% of the total amount of pork sausages consumed worldwide. Meatable hopes their product will be the first step for cultured meat in the consumer market.
But despite the sustainable production and the tasty nature of the sausages, it is not yet legal to eat cultured meat in the EU. Meatable is working closely with the Dutch regulatory authorities to enable tastings of cultured meat on a wider scale – following the approved proposal earlier this year. Meatable hopes that the societal evolution of regulations and safety standards will lead to the company being able to offer its products to consumers by 2025, if not sooner.

In the meantime, Meatable will continue to optimize the cultured meat development process. To this end, it is supported by a sensory testing panel of food scientists and chefs. With this approach, the company wants to ensure that the end product gets the right taste and characteristics of traditional meat in order to further develop other products.
